Swang Dwang
Swang Dwang empowers vulnerable communities through education, livelihoods, healthcare, and skill development, creating sustainable opportunities and dignified lives in rural Manipur.
Swang Dwang is a community-based non-profit organization based in Manipur, working for the welfare and empowerment of vulnerable and marginalized communities. The organization focuses on supporting orphaned and elderly individuals, women, school and college dropouts, drug-affected youth, farmers, children, and economically disadvantaged families through sustainable development initiatives. Founded in 2014 by a group of committed social workers and activists, Swang Dwang was established to address the growing social and economic challenges faced by tribal communities in the remote hilly regions of Tamenglong and Noney districts. The founders observed increasing school dropout rates, unemployment, drug abuse, migration, and social instability among youth, especially young girls from vulnerable backgrounds. Motivated by a shared vision of community empowerment, they initiated grassroots programmes to create local opportunities and improve living conditions. Swang Dwang believes in empowering communities through education, skill development, healthcare awareness, entrepreneurship, and sustainable livelihood promotion. The organization encourages vulnerable youth and women to remain in their hometowns by creating local employment opportunities, promoting financial discipline, and supporting self-reliance. The organization actively promotes income-generating activities such as mushroom cultivation, bamboo shoot fermentation and processing, entrepreneurship development, and market linkage support. Through its livelihood programmes, around 90 women and 60 youth have been trained and supported to establish their own cultivation units individually and through 3 Self-Help Groups (SHGs). Through strong community engagement and partnerships, Swang Dwang continues to create positive social impact and promote inclusive and sustainable development across Manipur.
