Swang Dwang

Swang Dwang empowers vulnerable communities through education, livelihoods, healthcare, and skill development, creating sustainable opportunities and dignified lives in rural Manipur.

Swang Dwang is a community-based non-profit organization based in Manipur, working for the welfare and empowerment of vulnerable and marginalized communities. The organization focuses on supporting orphaned and elderly individuals, women, school and college dropouts, drug-affected youth, farmers, children, and economically disadvantaged families through sustainable development initiatives. Founded in 2014 by a group of committed social workers and activists, Swang Dwang was established to address the growing social and economic challenges faced by tribal communities in the remote hilly regions of Tamenglong and Noney districts. The founders observed increasing school dropout rates, unemployment, drug abuse, migration, and social instability among youth, especially young girls from vulnerable backgrounds. Events

Bamboo Shoots Fermentation and Processing Training Programme

This programme trains local communities, especially women and SHGs, in traditional and modern methods of bamboo shoot fermentation, hygienic processing, preservation, packaging, and value addition. The initiative promotes indigenous food products while preserving the traditional food culture and knowledge of the Rongmei tribe in Tamenglong and Noney Districts. It also enhances income opportunities and encourages women-led entrepreneurship in rural communities.

Programs

Mushroom Cultivation Training Programme

Swang Dwang conducts ongoing mushroom cultivation training programmes for farmers, women, unemployed youth, and self-help groups in Tamenglong and Noney Districts. The programme provides practical training on mushroom production, spawn handling, substrate preparation, harvesting, packaging, and marketing. The initiative helps participants generate sustainable income, improve household livelihoods, and develop small-scale agribusinesses using locally available resources. Many women and youth have successfully established their own mushroom cultivation units after completing the training.
